Portable Magic is proud to announce the debut single release from Hattie Murdoch...

After swimming the ocean floor with her debut EP, Hattie Murdoch is now rising to the surface to unleash her debut single. Entitled ‘Secret War’, the single will be released on 29th July 2012 on digital download, via Portable Magic.

Secret War follows on from Murdoch’s successful EP Ocean Floor, which introduced her to an ever growing audience. The EP track Won’t Back Down was chosen by iTunes to feature in their ‘What’s Hot’ section, while the Das Kapital Remix of her track Submarine was chosen to feature in the US television series, Ringer, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar. The song was also used in an online video blog which has now amassed over 140,000 views on YouTube. Like previous songs Black Shadow, Submarine and Won’t Back Down which made up her Ocean Floor EP, Murdoch worked on Secret War with Global Underground/Ministry of Sound’s John Elliott and Andrew Archer of Trafik.

Secret War is an entirely different side to Murdoch’s hugely iridescent musical personality. Her influences, ranging from folk, electronica, and hip-hop have enabled her to craft a style that is bursting with soaring melodies, luscious layered harmonies and honest lyrical integrity. The song is set against a stomping drumbeat and thrusting electronic stabs that captivate the listener at every level. Murdoch explains that “The song is about battles in your own head – indecisions, protection, picking the wrong and right choices. I’m talking about the secrets that you have with somebody else and the way you want to protect them, how precious those secrets are, however dark and how they can be confusing, a bit of a mind f**k. The middle 8 is about those secrets unravelling... perhaps it’s a good thing in the end, but not at the time. But the overall theme of song is more about making up your own mind about things – making your own mistakes.”

The Secret War single package comes with a brand new unheard b-side; a haunting ballad entitled Wait. Remixes come from the likes of Lexicon Avenue, Styles & Complete and Reform School.
